Jeremie Frimpong says the lack of Scottish Premiership action in recent times has left a void in his life that he cannot wait to fill when he returns to training this week.

The coronavirus pandemic has halted all football since March, putting an early end to the season and giving players more free time than they know what to do with. Frimpong has been maintaining his fitness levels, like all of his teammates, but insists there's nothing like the real thing.

And Celtic's young player of the year for last season admits he's desperate to get back to action. "I can't wait to get back to training this week," he said. "All I've been doing back home is running all the time. To think I could even just be kicking the ball with another team-mate is a great feeling. But I feel fit and strong. I have been working hard.

"I love football. I've missed the game and I just want to get back to it. When I was at home and we couldn't play, I felt like I was missing something from my life. It's going to be a really safe environment for the players at the training ground.

"The club have put everything in place for the testing and I can't wait to get back out there."

Celtic are preparing an all-out assault on the Premiership once again this season as they bid to make history and win the Holy Grail that is 10 in a row. And Frimpong is confident they can do just that - and seal Champions League qualification in the same breath - with the same hard work that earned them the trophy last term.

"I had so many highlights this season but winning the league is the best," Frimpong added. "It's unreal to do that in my first year at Celtic and hopefully there are many more to come. I just want to win as many trophies as possible. I play football to do that.

"The Champions League is [also] a new challenge for me and I just can't wait for it. We worked so hard to win the league and to get to the group stages would be amazing. I want to play against the best teams in Europe for Celtic."
