Celtic favourite Chris Sutton admits he was shocked to see Jonny Hayes depart Parkhead as the Irishman gets set to re-sign for Aberdeen.

Hayes left Glasgow earlier this summer after three years at the Hoops despite manager Neil Lennon's hopes to keep him. Sutton, too - a former teammate of Lennon's - was surprised to see Hayes leave as he was a steady hand when called upon in any position.

Sutton took to social media to wish Hayes, 32, luck ahead of his proposed return to Pittodrie and the retired striker believes the Dons have done well to seal his signature. He said: "Surprised Celtic didn’t hold on to him but good luck to Johnny Hayes on his return to Aberdeen... always gave his all in a Celtic jersey and never let the team down. Decent business for Aberdeen."

It comes as Derek McInnes closes in on his ex-player with a move to bringing Hayes back for a second spell. The winger-turned-left-back starred for the Reds for five years before eventually signing for Celtic in 2017.
