Glasgow City have announced the signing of South African captain Janine Van Wyk ahead of their UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign restarting next month.

Van Wyk who captained her country at last simmers FIFA Women's World Cup in France which was South Africa's first ever appearance at a World Cup becomes one of the biggest signings in Scottish Women's football history.

She is the most capped player in South Africa's history as she has made 170 appearances for her country. Van Wyk founded her own club, JVW, in South Africa eight years ago to help identify and develop women's talent. Her last club was Fortuna Hjorring but she had to leave the club in January due to injury.

She becomes the third new addition at Petershill Park as the club have already brought in Krystyna Freda and Zaneta Wyne.

Speaking on the club website about putting pen to paper at City Van Wyk said: "I am extremely excited to start this new chapter in my football career with a football club that is known to be the best team in the Scottish top League. I look forward to playing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, win titles and most importantly continue to learn as much as I can about the insights of the game and hopefully add value to the squad with the experience I carry."

City manager Scott Booth added: “We are absolutely delighted to bring Janine van Wyk to our club. She has incredible experience and I feel this will be key for us this season. Janine captained her nation at the 2019 World Cup and is their record cap holder. I know that she will 100% lead by example and fit in to our already talented squad.”
