Celtic have had an initial £3.2million bid for AEK Athens goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas booted out.

The Hoops are desperate to bolster their ranks with a new stopper ahead of the new season after releasing Craig Gordon and resigning themselves to losing Fraser Forster.

Neil Lennon has turned his attention to Europe for a new player and hoped an early bid for Barkas would convince his Greek club to part ways with their man.

However it is understood AEK want upwards of £4.6million for Barkas and are still a way away from agreeing any deal with Celtic.

Leeds United - now in the Premier League - and Montpellier both want Barkas and could potentially make their move but Lennon hopes to return to the table with a stronger financial package.

David Marshall and Joe Hart have also been linked with Celtic, as has former St Mirren goalie Vaclav Hladky.
