Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock has claimed he tried to sign Boli Bolingoli on loan a week before the defender's Spain shame.

Boli faces severe punishment at Celtic after taking a secret trip to Spain and failing to self-isolate before playing against Kilmarnock a few days later.

The left-back has put the Premiership in jeopardy and risked the health and safety of his own teammates as well as Killie's players and staff.

Celts boss Neil Lennon blasted the player and told how he was livid at his actions. Chris Sutton also claimed the Belgian proved he 'doesn't give a s***' about his team and Kris Commons called for him to be sacked.

Boli, 25, now appears to be loan listed. But one destination that now appears closed to him is Boro - after Warnock told of his relief that he wasn't able to get any deal done.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the ex-Cardiff City manager said: "I rang Celtic last week to try and get Bolingoli on loan, good job we didn’t get him.

"Would I go back in for him now? No, I don't think so."
