Rangers target Jacob Murphy is set to be given a chance to make the cut at Newcastle.

Gers were keen on a move for the Englishman but manager Steve Bruce has told the player to expect the opportunity to prove himself. Murphy enjoyed a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday last season and West Brom before that.

The winger is in the final year of his contract and could be persuaded to make the switch to Glasgow, however it is believed Steven Gerrard would have to move on some fringe players before any deal is possible for Murphy.

Bruce, though, is willing to give the 24-year-old time this term to see what he can do. He said: "[Murphy] is probably thinking he’s not had a fair crack of the whip, and certainly I haven’t seen a great deal of him. It’ll be interesting to see how he does for us.

"I know he had a really good spell at Sheffield Wednesday last year and did very well.

"They think the world of him. He did very, very well and would like him back, that’s fair to say."

Murphy signed for the Magpies in 2017 for £12million and has made just 41 appearances - including those from the bench - in three years, scoring once.
