PHILIPPE MONTANIER believes Standard Liege will be facing 'one of the best teams in Europe' when they host Rangers in their Europa League opener.

The Gers kick-off their Group D campaign with a tricky tie in Belgium as Steven Gerrard's side set their sights on another place in the knock-out rounds this term.

Liege earned a 1-1 draw with league leaders Club Brugge at the weekend, while Rangers maintained their unbeaten start to the Premiership with Old Firm victory.

And boss Montanier is expecting a difficult encounter against a Gerrard-guided side that have produced some terrific showings on the continent over the last two seasons.

Montanier said: "We have a strong group, we have to win at home. But in terms of statistics, we will play against one of the best teams in Europe.

"They have planted 37 goals, conceded 4 goals and made 11 clean sheets in all competitions up to 'See you now. They are not developing a traditional Scottish game and Steven Gerrard does a very good job.

"A two-way team, they defend and attack together. Our opponent is fast, technical and moving forward. Us we will have to be wary of that.

"Brugge had a big performance in the Champions League. And we stood up to them on Saturday night.

"We are able to raise our level against big opponents. This will be the case against Rangers, we are wary but confident about our last performance."
