Celtic fans watched their side put in a more spirited performance against AC Milan last night - but still come up short in their opening Europa League fixture at Parkhead.

The Hoops were bested 3-1 by the Italian giants just a few days removed from their Old Firm defeat to Rangers. And while some of the Celtic players put in more of a competent performance, others were singled out for criticism.

Loan signing Shane Duffy was trending on Twitter after the game as some sections of the home support accused the Irishman of being slow off the mark and failing to stop at least two goals he perhaps might have on another day. Duffy, 28, came in for some criticism.

One fan joked: "Shane Duffy is just Efe Ambrose with a Wolfetones CD," while another added: "We would be better off with Shane from Westlife here." One commented: "Unpopular opinion, Shane Duffy is overrated to f***". A fourth wrote on social media: "I've seen milk turn quicker."

Manager Neil Lennon was also not let off the hook after refusing to swap from 3-5-2 to 4-2-3-1 quicker following his side's dismal 2-0 loss to Rangers last weekend. One fan moaned: "Neil Lennon that’s what’s wrong , insists with playing 3-5-2 when it isn’t working and is so arrogant he won’t change it".

Other fans were content with their side's performance against Milan, believing it to be better than their Gers defeat. One optimist wrote: "In short, losing is sh**. Saturday was sh**, but last night was a little better. It’s easy to point out the negatives in defeat, but there were signs of the old Celtic. As much as a result would’ve been great, all I wanted – and needed after Saturday – was a flicker of hope."
