IT’S the best book in Scotland and all of Glasgow life is in it – including our very own Wee Red Book.
Shuggie Bain, by Pollok author Douglas Stuart, has just been named Waterstones Scottish Book of the Year and it is well on its way to winning the Booker.
The story follows the title character through his childhood brought up by an alcoholic mother in Glasgow and Lanarkshire’s mining communities.
Shuggie is no ordinary Glasgow lad so later in the novel, when one of the other characters tells him to be ‘more like the other wee boys’ , he hands him a copy of the Wee Red Book to help him on the way.
The Wee Red Book is the Scottish football fan’s ‘bible’, listing everything from cup winners and league winners, up-coming fixtures and information on every Scottish player. It has been going strong for 92 years.
