STEVEN GERRARD was delighted to see James Tavernier and Connor Goldson step up when needed as Rangers earned a 2-1 win over Dundee United.

Tavernier netted his 17th goal of a remarkable campaign with a stunning long-range free-kick to break the deadlock at Tannadice.

And Goldson headed home a cross from his captain to clinch the win after Liam Smith had pulled United level.

Rangers have shown real prowess from set-pieces this term and Gerrard is pleased to see the efforts of coach Tom Culshaw paying off after his key men came to the fore once again.

Gerrard said: "Their leadership has been superb since the beginning of the run and they have stepped up at big times and big moments. Connor scores a similar goal to the one he did at Celtic Park, it is a great delivery from James.

"The free-kick, it doesn’t matter who you are or who you are playing for, that is a world class moment to execute it in that style from where it was. It was a superb bit of magic.

"It (the set pieces) has been really good at the right times. We have put a lot of work and effort into making sure we are a threat and it is important that we defend set plays for our lives at the other end.

"TC is at the forefront of that but you have still got to have the players to go and put the quality in there in the first place and have the players that are hungry to go and score goals. We have got that at the moment."
