STEVEN GERRARD insists Glen Kamara deserves all the credit for his fine effort against St Johnstone as he urged the midfielder to add more goals to his game for Rangers.

Kamara has been an integral part of the Ibrox engine room once again this term but he previously only had one strike to his name after netting in the 3-3 Europa League draw with Benfica last month.

He showed his prowess in the final third at McDiarmid Park as he collected a lovely through ball from Joe Aribo and finished with real composure beyond Zander Clark to put Rangers 2-0 up on the night.

Goals either side of that strike from Kemar Roofe and Ianis Hagi maintained the 16 point lead at the top of the Premiership for Rangers ahead of their Boxing Day clash with Hibernian.

And boss Gerrard - who refused to be drawn on Kamara's contract situation at Ibrox - was delighted to see the Finnish internationalist show a more attacking side to his game against the Saints.

Gerrard said: "Normally Glen Kamara tries to check back and pass that but he wiped his nose and finished it away.

“I'm pleased for Glen because he could have felt sorry for himself after the weekend but I thought he was outstanding all night.

“I can't take the credit for someone making a fantastic run and finishing a goal like that. I can encourage midfielders to join in, of course, and we can give them a platform to do it.

“But they have to carry it out, so Glen deserves all the credit for that. But he's just a fabulous player.

"He's clever and he can do it. He can get goals, he can get assists.

"He had an effort that hit the roof of the net just before. What we do is give them licence to go express themselves so it's very pleasing to see."
