ROYAL ANTWERP have been rocked by the departure of manager Ivan Leko ahead of their Europa League clash with Rangers

The 42-year-old has penned a lucrative contract with Chinese giants Shanghai SIPG, who count the likes of ex-Chelsea star Oscar, Hulk and Marko Arnautovic among their numbers.

Antwerp were initially approached by Shanghai earlier this month and reluctantly gave Leko permission to discuss the project of replacing Vitor Pereira at the helm.

However, he kept his decision private as Antwerp navigated a packed festive fixture list, which concluded with a 2-1 victory over Charleroi at the weekend.

And it was confirmed yesterday that Leko has decided to make the move to China, where he is expected to be joined by his assistant Edward Still.

The Croatian coach leaves Antwerp fifth in the Belgian Pro League and searching for a new boss ahead of their February showdown with the Gers.

An Antwerp statement confirmed: “Antwerp coach Ivan Leko has confirmed that he will end his current contract with immediate effect.

“Almost two weeks ago the club was informed of interest in Ivan Leko by the Chinese club SIPG - and today we received an official letter that the coach is terminating his contract and leaving The Great Old immediately.

“The club regrets that Ivan Leko terminates his contract prematurely, but wishes him every success in his further career. The club is now taking the time to appoint a new head coach.

“Communication will not take place until that appointment has been ratified.”
