Raith Rovers are set to complete the loan signing of Rangers winger Kai Kennedy within the next 24 hours.

The 18-year-old is poised to pen a new deal with Rangers after convincing the Ibrox hierarchy he deserves a longer stay.

The Scotland under-19 cap was due to be out of contract at the end of the season but will ink a new agreement before being farmed out to Rovers.

Kennedy has played 10 times for Inverness Caley Thistle on loan this term and they had first option beyond January but the Highlanders have confirmed his return to Rangers.

They have cited difficulties with the youngster living on his own in Inverness - away from his parents for the first time - under coronavirus restrictions.

Signing for Raith will allow him to return to his family house in Glasgow and ease his homesickness.

An Inverness statement read: “The club can confirm that Kai Kennedy’s loan period has come to an end.

“Kai played 10 times for the club, scoring once, and acquitted himself exceptionally well both in training and in games.

“Unfortunately. he found the pandemic restrictions and the fact he was so far away from his family particularly difficult and became increasingly, and understandably, homesick.

“We wish Kai the best for the rest of his career at Rangers and thank him for all of his efforts.”

Kennedy will increase Raith’s attacking options, with on-loan Aberdeen youngster Ethan Ross and former Wolves, Hamilton Accies and Ross County winger Dan Armstrong currently providing width to John McGlynn’s forward line.

The move is expected to be confirmed by Thursday, once the relevant paperwork for both the new contract and loan have been completed.
