JOHN KENNEDY has confirmed that Celtic are considering bringing Filip Benkovic back to the club as they look to bolster their defence due to the long-term injury suffered by Christopher Jullien.

Former Celtic manager and current Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers said during the week that a return to Glasgow would make sense for his player and for his old club, and Kennedy admits that Benkovic is on their shortlist for this month’s transfer window.

“Yeah, Filip is one we know very well,” Kennedy said. “And with Christopher Jullien’s situation it puts us in a position where we’re probably lacking a bit of presence there and a bit of cover.

“So, it’s a position we’ll probably try to get a body in.

“Filip is one we know very well. He’s been here before, he knows the club well, he knows ourselves well, and he’s certainly one who would be on our shortlist to look at in terms of moving forward.

“So, yeah, he’s one we know and he’s one we’ll consider, and we’ll hopefully choose the right one and get that over the line.”

Kennedy is hoping that Celtic can get Benkovic or another central defender in sooner rather than later.

“We want to do it as quickly as we can,” he said. “It’s difficult because you go to the club firstly and they will have an opinion on it, then the player might have a number of options and it’s a case of convincing them it’s the right move for them.

“We’ll move swiftly on it, but within reason and making sure we’re making the right move for the right player. And also that the player is on board for what we want to do in the rest of the season.

“Hopefully we can get it done, but again, we need to make sure we do it properly.”
