STEVEN Gerrard has stressed that Rangers will remain fully focused on lifting their first Scottish title since 2011 if they equal a 48-year-old post-war record for consecutive top flight wins this afternoon.

The Ibrox club have triumphed in their last 15 Premiership fixtures and have a chance to match the 16 game winning streak Jock Wallace’s side went on in the old First Division in the 1972/73 campaign today.

Gerrard admitted it will be a “bonus” to enter the Glasgow club’s record books if his men overcome Motherwell at Fir Park and maintain their lead over Celtic in the table.

However, the former Liverpool and England midfielder has stated he is far more concerned with his players closing out the league.

“They have set a really good strong standard this season,” he said. “But the idea and the challenge is to maintain that as long as possible. If that means we break or equal certain records along the way then fantastic. That is always a bonus.

“But the plan is not to break post-war records of any other manager really, the idea is to try and maintain this form right through to the end of the season and to be a success.

“They are the only goals we are really focused on at the moment rather than setting any other record. But it is always a bonus and nice when people remind you of them along the way.”

Gerrard is hopeful the return of Scott Arfield, Ryan Jack and Kemar Roofe from injury in the coming weeks will help Rangers to maintain their form at home and abroad.

“That can only make us strong for sure,” he said. “We have missed Jack in many ways. He is a very important member of the team and the squad. I don’t think I have to go on record again to reiterate how much we rate him as a player or the importance of his leadership within the group.

“To have him back in full training on Thursday was a huge boost. He can only make the group stronger and more competitive moving forward.

“Arfield, we’re hoping can keep progressing as he is and hopefully by the end of the month, beginning of next we can have him back in the group.

“He is played a real important role at a key time this season. He has scored important goals and put in important performances. He has really stood up and been counted this season. He is a disappointed and frustrated not to be with the group now. Hopefully he comes back in a good place ready to help us again.”

Gerrard continued: “Kemar should be with us again next week. His goals have been vital for us as well. He is another leader. We are hoping by the end of the month we could have three key, important leaders back within the group.

“But this season when we have had a big player out or a group of big players out we have managed to cope extremely well which tells me the squad is in a better place, competition for places is better and we aren’t heavily reliant on any individual or couple of individuals within that group.”
