Brendan Rodgers insists fans only need look at Celtic's bank balance to see how good outgoing chief executive Peter Lawwell has been for the club.

Lawwell announced this morning that he will retire at the end of the season to be replaced by Dominic McKay. The 61-year-old has been at the helm as the Hoops won 29 trophies including their historic quadruple treble, and all within the club insist he will be a huge miss.

Rodgers, who worked with Lawwell during his time as Parkhead manager between 2016-2019, told of the stability the CEO brought to the club throughout his tenure.

“I was obviously aware when I was there what the long-term plan would be and that at some point over the next few years this would be the case,” said the Northern Irishman. "You only have to look at how Celtic is run as a business and the figures behind that to see how well he has done there.

“He has brought great stability to the club and you only have to look at the bank balance to see he has run the club extremely well

“He loves the club and has a real passion for Celtic and it will be a sad day when he does retire, but he will always be a Celtic supporter.

“He’s done a fantastic job and he will step aside and someone else will come on in and take on the mantle.”

Neil Lennon also heaped praise on Lawwell, saying: "He's been brilliant to work for. We have had our fall-outs over the piece but he has had a huge positive influence on my career and many others. The success the club has had during his reign has been absolutely phenomenal.

"I am sad to see him go but 17 years is a huge amount of time for a job as pressurised as that. You need a thick skin to do my job or Peter's job and he has certainly developed that over the years. He is a brilliant negotiator, very shrewd and forward thinking CEO.

"He has been one of the best in British football. He will be a big miss, no question of that.''
