The Mirror claim that there is a 'growing belief' that Klopp will quit Anfield to take over as Germany manager in the summer after the Euros, prompting Liverpool chiefs to explore other candidates for the post in the event that the former Borussia Dortmund boss leaves.

And according to the bookies, Rangers manager Gerrard is the heavy favourite to seal an emotional return to England during the close season.

Sky Bet are offering odds of 13/8 that the Reds great will be the next permanent manager at Liverpool - comfortably the lowest odds of any potential replacement for Klopp.

Spaniard Xabi Alonso, who was part of the 2005 Champions League-winning side with Gerrard, is the next favourite at 10/1, while RB Leipzig head coach Julien Nagelsmann and former Anfield manager Rafa Benitez have been given a 14/1 shot.

Diego Simeone, Max Allegri, Didier Deschamps and Zinedine Zidane are the other high-profile candidates that the bookies think are in the frame for the role, should it become available.
