GLASGOW coach Danny Wilson may have warned recently that it will take more than one recruitment cycle to transform the Warriors squad, but he is certainly going about the task with some urgency right now. Today's signing of back-row forwards Ally Miller and Rory Darge from Edinburgh took the number of new additions into double figures, and with some established players moving on there is every chance that Wilson’s team next season will look radically different.

While Miller and Darge will not join until the summer, some of the changes have already taken place. Veteran stand-off Ian Keatley has joined for the rest of the season at least, while winger Cole Forbes has also signed and made his debut.

On the whole, though, the real impact will be felt in the autumn, especially in the pack. In addition to Forbes and Keatley, Wilson has signed Duncan Weir, Josh McKay and Sione Tuipulotu to bolster his options behind the scrum, but his main focus to date has been on strengthening the forwards.

Like Miller and Darge, Simon Berghan will make the move from Edinburgh in the summer, while Jamie Bhatti will return to Scotstoun from Bath, having transferred from Richard Cockerill’s squad to the West Country club at the start of the year. Lock Lewis Bean will return on a permanent basis from Northampton after impressing while on loan earlier this season, and Australian international Jack Dempsey will add a powerful presence to the back row.

With Ryan Wilson, Matt Fagerson, Tom Gordon and Rob Harley also competing for the three places, Darge and Miller know there is no guarantee of the regular rugby they crave. But they believe their style of play is suited to the Warriors’ preferred game plan, and have been encouraged by what they heard from Wilson prior to agreeing the move from Murrayfield to Scotstoun.

"I’m ready to take the next step in my career and really test myself, and I believe Glasgow is the right environment in which to do that," the 24-year-old Miller told the Warriors website. “I’ve been really enjoying my rugby these last few seasons and I’m looking forward to playing Glasgow’s free-flowing brand of attacking rugby.

“Speaking to Danny, he liked the attacking style of rugby that I developed through the sevens programme and that I enjoy playing. I’m looking forward to playing that exciting brand of rugby Glasgow are known to play and adding to the squad. I’m buzzing to get across and get started.”

Formerly with Melrose, Watsonians and London Scottish, 24-year-old Miller has made six appearances for Edinburgh in the current campaign and has also been a regular member of the Scotland Sevens squad in recent seasons. Darge, 21, made his Edinburgh debut earlier this season, having signed last summer on the back of some impressive performances for Scotland Under-20s. He also used to play for Melrose, and like Miller thinks he will fit in with the kind of game the Warriors want to play.

“I’m looking forward to making the move to Glasgow,” he said. “When I spoke with Danny he talked about what he looks for in his opensides and I think I not only suit the mould but I also suit Glasgow’s style of play.

“From watching Glasgow this season, I think the club is going places. If you look at the side that played against Leinster there are a lot of young guys getting their opportunity and playing well.

“My main motivation right now is to play as much rugby as I can and I feel that Glasgow will be the best place for me to do that. I’m grateful for the opportunity to come into a new environment, prove myself and earn my right to wear the jersey.”

Unsurprisingly, Wilson himself is also convinced that the pair will fit in well with what he is building at Scotstoun. “I’ve watched Ally play in recent games for Edinburgh,” he said. “With his sevens background, he’s an evasive ball-carrier and has a good skill set.

“Rory is an exciting young Scottish prospect. He’s physical on both sides of the ball and a talent for the future, and it’s great to be adding more depth to an already competitive back row.”
