THAT Rangers now have the winning mentality that served Steven Gerrard so well during his own playing career with Liverpool and England has been obvious in their play in the 2020/21 campaign.
They won the Premiership for the first time in 10 years with six games to spare, stopped Celtic completing 10-In-A-Row in the process and now have the chance to go undefeated in the top flight for the first time in 122 years and only the second time in their entire history.
Gerrard, who could be without both of his right backs, James Tavernier and Nathan Patterson, this afternoon, would dearly love the Ibrox club to continue their 32 unbeaten run in the league and make a little bit of history in the final six games of the season.
However, he admits winning the Scottish Cup, the only trophy available to them following their exit from the Europa League on Thursday evening, and completing a domestic double is now their main objective.
Their cup match with League One opponents Cove Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday week, then, is arguably more of a concern and focus than the dead rubber today.
“Listen, winning football matches is the main motivation,” he said. “If we can go from now until the end of the season unbeaten then of course it would be a wonderful achievement, it would be fantastic.
“But it’s not the priority, the priority is the next game and trying to win that game. It is a tough game, a tough place to go, but we will be ready and prepared to go and give it what we need to give it to try and win that game.
“Then we will breather and get ready for the remaining split fixtures. We don’t know when they’re coming or when they will be. But once they get announced we will prepare in the best way we can to remain as consistent as we can."
Gerrard added: “The priority now, which won’t be a surprise to anyone, is the Scottish Cup because the main thing we get judged on here is success and winning trophies and that is our next opportunity.
“So if I had the choice it would be to have a successful run in the Scottish Cup rather than this Invincible tag or going the remainder of the season unbeaten. We will try it and we will use it as a motivation. But the priority is the Scottish Cup right now.”
