STEVEN GERRARD will give captain James Tavernier the chance to prove his fitness ahead of the Old Firm clash with Celtic next weekend.

But there is no update on the status of Ryan Jack as Rangers wait to discover the outcome of a scan on a troublesome calf injury.

Jack hasn't featured for Rangers since the win over Dundee United in February and was in London last weekend for further tests.

Rangers have still to get to the bottom of the issue but Gerrard - speaking after the 2-1 win over Hibernian - had a more positive update on Tavernier.

Gerrard said: “That news hasn't come yet unfortunately.

“I don't know what the delay is. We're waiting patiently to try to get an update on that situation.

“James has again had a good couple of days since we last spoke and he's pushing hard to be involved at the weekend

“We'll only do that if he is ready, we won't force that.

“He's been out too long for us to force that.

“He'll have to show this week that there's more progression and get him out amongst the team at some point if he's to earn a place in the squad."
