Ally McCoist believes Rangers must hold onto Ryan Kent this summer.

The winger has been in scintillating form for his club this season and remains on the shortlist of transfer targets for Leeds Utd who tried to tempt him south last year.

McCoist has been seriously impressed with the former Liverpool youngster this term and hopes the Ibrox outfit can keep hold of their star player who has continuously shown his talents during their title-winning campaign.

And Rangers have been desperate to tie him down, with a contract extension reportedly in the offing. Coisty told the Daily Record: "They can sell anyone but Kent.

"He is the one player who gives you something different. He opens up the game. Listen, I don't know the finances now, I'm hearing they might have to sell somebody and all of that type of stuff, which is understandable because business is business.

"So, if Rangers do have to balance the books a little bit, I totally understand it. From how I'm looking at it, it could well be Kent because his form has been fantastic. But I just think he is the one player who is different in that squad.

"You can argue you might be able to replace Alfredo Morelos' goals, or replace Glen Kamara in the middle of the park, or replace Ianis Hagi or Joe Aribo. Connor Goldson has been fantastic and you can have all of these arguments and discussions if, in an ideal situation, you could maybe pick the one that you could afford to let go.

"But I just think Kent is the one you can't."

Meanwhile Kent's boss, Steven Gerrard, has been named among the candidates for the Scottish Football Writers' Association manager of the year.

Callum Davidson of St Johnstone, David Martindale of Livingston and Scotland's Steve Clarke are the other coaches in the running.
