Celtic look set to be without one of their most important players going into their first Champions League qualifier next season.

Talisman Odsonne Edouard will be representing France at the delayed 2021 Olympics.

A report in The Sun states that the French Under 21 International will be a part of the squad travelling to Tokyo.

Glasgow Times:

The striker's call-up means he will miss Celtic’s second-round qualifiers on July 20/21 and 27/28 as France play group games against Mexico, South Africa and Japan on July 22, 25 and 28.

However, assuming his team progresses, the knockout stretch runs till August 7, meaning Edouard could miss up to four potential European ties for the Parkhead club.

This is because the Champions League third round is on August 3/4 and August 10, with Europa League qualifiers scheduled for the same week, should the Hoops drop down.

Despite having a disappointing season by his exceptionally high standards, the Frenchmen has still scored 21 goals in all competitions this term.

Play-offs for Europe's top two competitions start on the week beginning August 17.

But the 23-year old could miss his clubs whole summer of preparation and games.

After the last Scottish Premiership game, he will link up with the French U21s squad for their quarter-final match against Holland, with the potential of a semi-final and final in the same week.

This will be followed by Tokyo and after that, the player will likely be given rest time.

The Celtic star's absence will leave the club in desperate need of a replacement striker for the crucial qualifiers.
