It took him a while at the beginning of the season to make his mark, but David Turnbull feels he is only getting started as a Celtic player.

The midfield creator was not then-manager Neil Lennon's first choice when the season kicked-off but made himself indispensable to the side in the midst of a disastrous campaign which saw the Hoops surrender their Premiership title and win nothing for the first time in countless years.

Turnbull has been the one shining light this term for Celtic fans to feel optimistic about and the Scotland hopeful reckons there is more to come from him next season. "People have seen what I can do and it’s about doing that consistently," he told the club website

"I feel as if I’ve brought that into my game. I feel great going into next season after this year. This season was about getting back fully fit after a year out, creating chances and scoring as many goals as I can. I’ll be looking to do that even more next season.

"I want to help get us back up there where we belong. I’ll try my best and hopefully next season we can go on and do big things."

There is, mercifully for Celtic, just two games of the domestic season to go and Turnbull, 21, wants to go out with a bang as opposed to a whimper. This week sees Celts come up against Callum Davidson's high-flying St Johnstone who won the Betfred Cup last month and have the opportunity to seal a magnificent double in the Scottish Cup final later this month.

However, as it usually is, it's all about Celtic for Turnbull. He acknowledges the Saints' success, but won't focus too much on their skills, rather choosing to concentrate on improving his own.

"We want to go into the two games and finish on a high," Turnbull added. "We all know it’s been a tough season but we’re looking forward to the last two games. We need to go out there and try to put on a good performance and take that into next season.

"As a team, we look to perform in every game. Whether anyone’s watching, we always try to impress and work hard for the team.

"They’ve [St Johnstone] been playing very well this season. They’ve got good results, have won one cup and are going for their second. It’s about playing to our strengths, going out there and trying to get the win."
