A SPECIAL showing of Gregory's Girl and a "glittery night" of entertainment featuring drag queen star Lawrence Chaney are among the highlights of a packed programme of Euro 2020 Glasgow Green fan zone events. 

Music from Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite and stand-up from Fred Macaulay will also be on offer to keeps fans entertained between matches at the hotly anticipated tournament, which kicks off on Friday.

The Fan Zone Festival will run on days when there are no games – and the majority of afternoons when there is only an evening fixture – and will be viewable only from the Food & Beverage Garden area.

Organisers say cultural events will be a largely seated, subject to relevant physical distancing requirements, and all performances must be booked in advance.

Councillor David McDonald, chair of Glasgow Life and depute leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “The Fan Zone Festival programme represents the huge breadth of cultural talent we have here on our doorstep in Glasgow and right across Scotland.

"So many of us have sorely missed the connection, atmosphere and joy that comes from live entertainment and it will be a memorable moment for the sector as we see artists and performers take to the stage on Glasgow Green."

Today's announcement of events comes in the week where Scottish Government ministers finally gave the fan zone the greenlight, despite concerns from some in the local community.  

Thousands of supporters will descend on the park to enjoy the action each day, with Scotland due to take part in a major men's international event for the first time in 23 years. 

Cllr McDonald added: “The rich programme represents the country’s diverse communities, art forms and festivals and we can’t wait to welcome music, comedy, arts, dance, film fans and more along to soak up the wonderful cultural offering this summer.

"Creating a safe and controlled environment is central to the Fan Zone and we want to assure people that all event partners are committed to staging a safe event and providing a COVID secure environment for visitors, participants and the local community.”

Other highlights from the event include: Refugee Festival Scotland marking World Refugee Day, Sunday, June 20, with an afternoon of special musical and dance performances; Funny at the Fan Zone with Susie McCabe and Soccer FM on Friday, June 25, featuring Ray Bradshaw, Steven Mill, Billy Kirkwood; and the Glasgow Jazz Festival putting on a special show on Wednesday, June 30.

The performances for the cultural programme will be ticketed and largely free, except for six selected performances priced at £20 per table, or £10 for an accessible ticket with access to the viewing platform for one person plus a free companion.

Comedian Susie McCabe said: It’s an honour to be invited to take part in this event.
