FORMER Celtic manager John Barnes has warned Hoops fans that they will need to be patient with new manager Ange Postecoglou after the Greek-born Australian was named as Neil Lennon's successor in the Parkhead hot seat.

The 55-year-old, who has previously managed the Socceroos at the World Cup, was most recently working with Yokohama F Marinos in Japan before making the switch to Glasgow.

Postecoglou is a respected figure within Asian coaching but is something of an unknown in Europe having never worked on the continent, barring a 10-month spell at Greek third tier side Panachaiki in 2008.

Some supporters have aired their concerns on social media by questioning Postecoglou's suitability to the role, given his inexperience in this part of the world.

But Barnes thinks it's vital that the home fans at Celtic Park get right behind the new manager from the get-go - adding that if they don't, their cross-city rivals will secure a second consecutive Premiership crown.

“Ange Postecoglou has been named as the new manager of Celtic, and if the club want to be successful, everyone must get behind him," Barnes reasoned.

"He hasn’t managed in Europe, and some people will think this makes his appointment a risk – not in terms of his ability, but in terms of the perception of his ability.

"Everyone must support him and give him time.

“The players have to buy in to what he wants – he has a good reputation for managing football teams and has been successful.

“If people are going to be negative from the start and not give him an opportunity, Rangers will win the league again.

"Celtic fans have to make up their mind as to what they want - but I’m sure they’ll support him.”
