Scotland legend Graeme Souness has mocked England and insisted “football ain’t coming home” after they drew with Steve Clarke’s side.

Scotland held on for an admirable 0-0 tie at Wembley last night, keeping their hopes of progression to the knockout stage alive.

And the former Rangers and Liverpool midfielder insisted that England’s chances of winning the tournament were slim.

He told ITV: “"Football ain’t coming home with that team, I can tell you.”

The pundit went on to praise Scotland’s performance in the game suggesting they were the better team and deserved at least a draw.

Souness suggested that they should not be praised for holding on for a draw because their performance merited more than a team just playing through passion.

He said: “Throughout the 90 minutes the Scottish players put their bodies on the line and got blocks in.

“But I want to emphasise and make this point because people will talk about Scotland being passionate and working harder than England. No!

“They did that, but they also played better than England for much of the game. Their passing was better, their movement was better.

“They looked like more of a team than England did.”

He was full of praise for Billy Gilmour too, who made his first international appearance last night and gave a particularly memorable performance.

He said: “The boy Billy Gilmour for his first international game was fantastic. He was the best midfield player on the pitch.

“Scotland were quality tonight and I don’t want anyone to leave tonight and think it was just about Scotland’s effort that got them the draw.

“They were a good team tonight.”

The result leaves Scotland on one point in the group, and a win against Croatia at Hampden on Tuesday could seal their progression to the knockout stages for the first time in their history.
