Manchester United and England legend Rio Ferdinand was forced to eat his words last night after he predicted a comfortable English win against Scotland.

Ferdinand had written Scotland’s chances off going into the game and told the BBC he wasn’t worried going into the match.

He said: It’s a huge game. I can’t wait. Nothing to fear, and we will go down and get our seat and watch it. Looking forward to it.

"England are going to win. I can’t see anything else, I’m telling you. I’ve never been this confident about a game in a major championship."

But he hadn’t prepared for the fighting performance put on by Steve Clarke’s Scotland. Committed and well drilled the visitors dug deep to battle for a point in London.

Many fans were quick to call out Ferdinand’s statement after the game after his confidence backfired.

One fan wrote on Twitter: “Hope Rio Ferdinand enjoyed the easiest game England will ever play.”

Scottish singer Amy Macdonald also retweeted Ferdinand’s comments after the game accompanied by a clown emoji.

While former player turned actor Martin Compston also tweeted: “Good thing they don’t mind replaying Gazza’s goal.”

The draw puts Scotland back in the running for getting out of the group stage, with a win against Croatia on Monday likely to put them through.

Ferdinand has not responded to the Tweets mocking his comments, but will perhaps be more careful with his word choice next time the two sides face off.
