JAMES TAVERNIER has detailed the importance of his relationship with Connor Goldson and revealed his dreams of playing Champions League football alongside the defender next season.

Tavernier and Goldson were hugely influential figures for Rangers last term as Steven Gerrard's side clinched the Premiership title courtesy of an unbeaten league campaign.

Goldson deputised as captain during Tavernier's injury-enforced absence as the right-back spent several weeks out of action following the knock he sustained away to Royal Antwerp in February.

Tavernier would return to action before the end of the season to help Gerrard's side over the winning line and then spark the celebrations as he became the first Ibrox skipper in a decade to hold aloft the top flight silverware.

And the 29-year-old is thankful for the support Goldson has given him on and off the park this term as Rangers prepare to reap the rewards of their efforts and return to Champions League action.

“I’ve loved it from the first moment Connor came in," Tavernier told the Rangers official souvenir magazine.

"I was with him at Shrewsbury so I knew him before he came here and we gelled straight away.

“Having that relationship with him next to me is great and we have an understanding on the pitch.

"If I go forward he knows the positions and the chemistry is so high, and even when it comes down to him scoring goals from my free-kicks, we have got a great understanding with each other.

“If it wasn’t for Connor next to me we wouldn’t have probably got the amount of success we have had this season.

"He has been such a pivotal part in that success and he leads by example day in day out.

“I’m really proud of what he has done and what he has achieved. I just can’t wait to play in the Champions League next season with him.”
