STEVEN DAVIS insists Rangers must have a 'fresh start' in the aftermath of their historic Premiership title win as the champions focus on further success this season.

The Light Blues continue their preparations for the new campaign with friendly fixtures at home to Brighton and Real Madrid this weekend.

Livingston are the visitors to Ibrox next Saturday as Rangers get their title defence off and running ahead of their return to the Champions League and a clash with Malmo or HJK Helsinki.

Davis was part of the squad that won Rangers' 54th league crown under the guidance of Walter Smith and the midfielder knows that the new season will bring new challenges after the power shifted across Glasgow last term.

“We know we’re going to be a target for teams having been champions last season but we’ve just had to reset really," Davis told Sky Sports.

“We’ve got the desire here to go on and have a sustained period of success as a team.

“I think we have the quality to do that and last season we showed we had the mentality. We need to go again and show it on the pitch once again.

“It’s a fresh start, we’ve had five or six weeks rest and recovery and then back into pre-season. The work started from there.

“We want to get off to a good start against Livi at home but we have two games this week again which will be a good test both physically and tactically.

“For a club like ourselves the league is always going to be the bread and butter so there will be a lot of focus on that.

“We had a couple of disappointments in the cup last season so that is something we are trying to address.

“And then there’s obviously Europe and the Champions League. We need to keep progressing as we have done.

“We know what it means to the club and the fans to be playing on that stage.

“It won’t be easy but we are certainly going to do all we can to get there."
