Brendan Rodgers won't be welcomed into any Celtic boozer in Glasgow any time soon.

But ask any Hoops fan which manager had their club playing the most attractive football and the Northern Irishman will likely be the man with the tally marks next to his name.

For Callum McGregor, though, he remembers the now-Leicester City boss reserving special praise for another former Celts boss for putting the club on the right track long before Rodgers showed up.

Ronny Deila, perhaps similarly to Ange Postecoglou, was an unknown entity in Glasgow when he rocked up to Parkhead from Stromsgodset in Norway. But he seemed to know his stuff and he won three trophies in two years. He also handed debuts to a certain Kieran Tierney and McGregor himself.

Glasgow Times:

"Ronny gave me my debut at Celtic and I'm forever grateful for that," McGregor told Sky Sports. "To have the opportunity to go and play for Celtic's first-team. That's all you ever want to do when you're a kid, when you're a ball boy you're watching it, your moment comes to put on the Hoops for the first time.

"I remember when Brendan came in he said that Ronny did a lot of the base level stuff for him, he was just adding his own sort of spin on it, but that Ronny actually put a lot of the building blocks in place and I don't think he gets as much credit as what he deserves in terms of the football he played as well.

"In his first season he was probably one bad decision away from winning a treble and it's such fine margins at this club. He was brilliant for the club and obviously brilliant for myself as well."

McGregor has been named Postecoglou's captain for the new regime and the Scotland cap is chuffed to etch his name into the history books once again.

But he knows he needs to win silverware at Celtic, and that's what he's setting out to do.

"To lift a trophy as Celtic captain would be another step on the ladder of dreams come true stuff," he added. "I'll be giving my absolute all and making sure everyone in there does as well.

"We have to accept we weren't good enough over the course of last season. What it does is make you super hungry for the season coming up."
