FORMER Celtic forward Kris Commons insists that Anthony Ralston isn't just the best right-back on the books at Parkhead this term, but the top player in his position in all of Scotland on current form.

The 22-year-old has often cut a maligned figure at Parkhead and had struggled to hold down a place in the starting XI until Ange Postecoglou's appointment in the summer.

Ralston has been first pick at right-back since the Greek-Australian pitched up in Glasgow's East End and has flourished under the tutelage of his new coach, enjoying a fine start to the new campaign.

The Celtic youth academy graduate - who has previously spent time out on loan at Queen's Park, Dundee United and St Johnstone, has already chipped in two goals and provided an assist - leading to calls for the defender to be included in Steve Clarke's Scotland squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Denmark, Moldova and Austria.

Commons thinks an international call-up would be a fine reward for Raltson's impressive early-season form - adding that as it stands, the Hoops defender is the best right-back in the Premiership.

"Tom Rogic and Anthony Ralston look like two new signings," Commons explained in his Daily Mail column. "Ralston, in particular, is a great example of the way a coach can develop a player and help them improve.

"The vast majority of Celtic fans probably wouldn't have wanted him anywhere near the first team this season because, quite simply, they didn't think he was good enough.

"But his performances over the past month have definitely silenced a lot of critics. It takes a lot of courage and mental strength to fight your way back like Ralston has.

"On current form, he's the best right-back in the country and should be in Steve Clarke's Scotland squad this week for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers."

Commons added that he has been similarly impressed with David Turnbull's free-scoring start to the season, insisting that Clarke cannot afford to overlook the 22-year-old playmaker for the imminent international triple-header.

Commons continued: "Then you've got David Turnbull who, although he was still playing well enough last season, looks to have taken his game on to a whole new level under the Celtic boss.

Glasgow Times:

"Not only should Turnbull be in Clarke's squad, he should be in the starting XI when we face Denmark in Copenhagen a week on Wednesday. Anything else would be a poor oversight from the Scotland boss."

The former Hoops attacker also believes that summer signings Kyogo Furuhashi and Liel Abada, both of whom have enjoyed fine starts to thier Celtic careers, could even enjoy record-breaking campaigns.

He added: "Kyogo Furuhashi has been the poster boy thus far for what fans are now calling 'Ange-ball'. The little Japanese striker has been a revelation with his pace, movement and finishing ability.

"Moussa Dembele's best season at Celtic saw him net 32 goals in all competitions. Odsonne Edouard's most prolific season brought 29 goals.

"Yet, if he stays fit, Kyogo will comfortably surpass both of those totals. Leigh Griffiths' tally of 40 goals in 2015-16 could even be a realistic target.

"Because make no mistake, Kyogo is a natural in front of goal. He will terrorise defences this season with his electric pace and movement.

"Liel Abada is another of Postecoglou's signings who has hit the ground running, but you also have to admire the way the manager has reinvigorated players who were already at the club."
