Ryan Jack has been included in Rangers' Europa League squad despite not playing a game since February.

The Scotland international has been carrying a calf knock but he looks set to return soon after being named in Steven Gerrard's squad for European competition.

Meanwhile, defender Jack Simpson, Brandon Barker, Nnamdi Ofoborh and Jermain Defoe have been left out of the squad.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Gers defender Alan Hutton admitted that Simpson will be hugely disappointed to miss out.

He said: “It will be tough to take, of course. It’s not ideal.

“Everybody wants to play in the European competitions, and he’ll be no different.

“The rules are in place around the eight home-grown players and unfortunately he doesn’t make it, so he’ll be very disappointed.

“Obviously, Helander could possibly be injured for the first games and now he can’t even come in and cover for him.

“It’s an opportunity to prove that he’s ready to fight by working hard instead of throwing his toys out of the pram.

“That’s how you can force your way back into the manager’s thinking for future games.”
