CHAMPIONSHIP sides Morton and Ayr have come together to probe an alleged incident of racist abuse from their game at the weekend.

The Honest Men released a statement yesterday announcing they were appealing for information after the report of alleged racial abuse from the Main Stand during the goalless draw at Somerset Park.

Signed by Safety and Stadium Manager Roy Provan, it revealed an Ayr supporter had reported the alleged abuse to a steward close to half-time.

And Mr Provan urged that fans to come forward to provide information on the incident.

The statement from Ayr read: "The Club has been made aware of alleged racial abuse having been shouted from the Main Stand at Somerset Park during Saturday's match against Morton.

"Can I request that anyone with information relating to this, contact myself via the email address provided below.

"In particular, I am looking to speak to an Ayr United supporter who spoke to a stand steward around half-time regarding this matter."

Now, Morton have broken their silence on the matter, urging fans to help the host team in their investigation.

A spokesperson wrote: "The Club has been made aware of alleged racial abuse having been shouted from the Main Stand at Somerset Park during Saturday’s match against Ayr United.

"We would like to urge anyone with information related to this incident to contact Roy Provan at Ayr United at the following address: stadium@ayrunitedfc.co.uk."

This is the latest alleged report of racial abuse in Scottish football this season.

Kelty Hearts forward Nathan Austin was subject to racist abuse in their clash with Albion Rovers.

This resulted in the Cliftonhill side banning a group of supporters from attending all further games.

Airdrieonians defender Rico Quitongo also claimed he was racially abused by a member of the Diamonds' support, with the League One side investigating the incident.
