FORMER Rangers loan star Bongani Zungu has been slammed by his own manager for being overweight after not kicking a ball since he left Ibrox.

The South African midfielder earned a title medal with Steven Gerrard's side after making a total of 21 appearances for Rangers last season, although he only started one league match - a 1-1 draw at Hamilton Accies where he was hooked after an hour.

Rangers declined to take up their option to complete a £4 million transfer on a permanent basis for the 29-year-old after his loan spell in Scotland ended and he returned to French second-tier club Amiens.

However, he's desperate to leave the club and has yet to kick a ball for them this season.
And manager Philippe Hinschberger has suggested Zungu is too tubby to tackle.

He said: "Bongani Zungu is not ready at all to play. His issue is that he has a weight problem.

"He's been working on this for a while and he's now on more than just one session a day. I've spoken to him about it, but the player himself must take charge.

"We're doing the maximum we can with him.

"He remains very good with the ball and can read the game, but he still carries weight and does not have the physique of a professional footballer."

Zungu, who according to reports in the local media returned to training ten kilos overweight, is out of contract at the end of the season with clubs in his native South Africa interested in him.
