RANGERS are reportedly targeting Swansea boss Russell Martin as a potential replacement for if Steven Gerrard leaves for Aston Villa.

The Ibrox boss is in talks with the Premier League club over a move south with his backroom team. 

And we reported that Rangers have stepped up their search for a replacement in the event that Gerrard finalises his move to Villa.

Now The Mirror claim Rangers are targeting a move for former loanee and Scotland international Russell Martin.

The newspaper also reports that Rangers have made "discreet enquiries" over Martin's availability.

But Herald and Times Sport understands Martin will not be the next Rangers manager and won;t be on Ross Wilson's list of targets.

The up-and-coming manager was only appointed Swansea in the summer and has led the club to 12th position currently in the Championship. He has won eight of his 20 matches in charge so far.

Prior to taking over at Swansea, Martin spent two years with MK Dons.

Martin spent the second-half of the 2017/18 season with Rangers after signing a six-month loan from Norwich.

He made 15 appearances for Rangers, scoring one goal, as the club finished third in the league.
