STEVEN GERRARD has sent his former player Nikola Katic a touching message upon his exit from Rangers.

The Liverpool legend left Ibrox on Thursday morning to become the new manager of Aston Villa.

Today, he has officially been joined by Gary McAllister, Michael Beale and Tom Culshaw among other members of his backroom team.

One player Gerrard was clearly always fond of during his time with Rangers was Katic.

The Croatian defender suffered a serious knee injury in the summer of 2020, ruling him out for the full of the title winning campaign.

This led to the 25-year-old been sent out on loan to Hajduk Split this summer to enable him to play regular first team football after missing a full year of football.

Players have been sending Gerrard well wishes on his next step in management with Villa.

Katic was no different, as he sent an emotional farewell to his old gaffer.

He commented on Instagram: "True gentlemen and top manager. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience and improving me as a player and a person.

"Wish you and your team nothing but the best in the new chapter."

This prompted Gerrard to send back a touching message to the Croat.

He said: "Love you kid."
