Forrest the man for big occasions

There are some players for whom the big occasion is a natural habitat and throughout his storied career, James Forrest has made a strong case for being in this category.

It took him five minutes after his introduction for the largely ineffectual Liel Abada to finally and fatally pierce the stubborn Saints rearguard that had proven impenetrable to others.

The goal was a straightforward finish low into the corner past Zander Clark but he took it with a composure that few of his teammates demonstrated throughout a close battle fought predominantly in the middle of the pitch.

It’s been a testing 18 months for the winger with various fitness issues contriving to limit his impact on the team but if Ange Postecoglou can keep him fit there’s no doubt he will be adding top drawer quality to an exciting and youthful front line where Jota also posed a serious threat on the night.

St Johnstone diligent and difficult

It's clear to anyone with even a remote interest in the tactical side of the game that Saints boss Callum Davidson is operating at a higher level than most of his peers.

His side is organised and drilled to an impressive degree while they always carry a threat on the counter.

Their pressing was remarkable for it’s intensity and consistency throughout the game with Chris Kane leading from the front.

While he faced bitter disappointment tonight, the remarkable achievement of last term in winning both cups will not be the last time he tastes success in his career you suspect.

Celtic do Bertie proud

While the players marked the legendary Lion’s passing with each of their shorts poignantly carrying the number 10, the fans chose to do so with an unmissable display of noise and colour.

A giant TIFO display in the Hoops’ end simply read “Bertie” while the fervor and fanfare that accompanied it was a fitting tribute to a man whose personality filled every room he ever stepped into.

Bertie always stressed he wanted to see Celtic entertain the fans and while the football was less than explosive, the moments leading up to kick off certainly met the great man’s impeccable standards.
