Celtic star David Turnbull left the League Cup final pitch in tears and clutching his hamstring as he became the latest squad member to succumb to a muscle injury.

The midfielder was clearly distraught to have missed out on his chance to influence the game further.

He was pictured by TV cameras on the bench visibly emotional as the match raged on.

Ange Postecoglou moved quickly to bring on Nir Bitton to replace Turnbull in the Hoops’ midfield as the Scotland star trudged off.

Pundit Michael Stewart wasn’t slow to ask questions over the number of injures Celtic have been suffering of late, hinting on Premier Sports' match coverage he feels Postecoglou’s high-intensity training methods may be at fault.

As Turnbull pulled up clutching the back of his thigh he said: “If this is another hamstring injury you have to question how this is happening. It’s not good.”

Stephen Craigan, Turnbull’s former youth coach at Motherwell said: “I’ve known David since he was 16 years old and this is the first muscle injury he’s ever, ever had.”
