PREPARATIONS for January's Celtic vs Rangers clash were thrown in chaos after Nicola Sturgeon's announcement of fan restrictions inside football stadia.

The Glasgow rivals were set to face-off in a powderkeg clash on January 2 but fans face a nervy wait over the plans for the match.

The latest Covid guidelines, which limit stadia to 500 people on a matchday, come into force on Boxing Day meaning it would affect the Celtic Park fixture.

But discussions have been underway between clubs and the SPFL over the possibility of bringing forward the winter break which could be a fan lifeline for the upcoming fixtures.

Here's everything we know so far about Celtic vs Rangers on January 2

WILL CELTIC VS RANGERS GO AHEAD?

IT has not yet been confirmed whether Celtic vs Rangers will go ahead on January 2.

As it stands that's the date the Glasgow rivals will face-off at 12pm at Celtic Park - but that could change dependent on the outcome from SPFL talks.

If the decision is made to bring the winter break forward then the match would have to be rescheduled.

It's reported the SPFL options for the winter break are either to stop matches after tonight's game, begin the break after the Boxing Day fixtures or continue as planned then break on January 3.

The only option which would see the match go ahead on the currently scheduled date would be if the break remains to begin on January 3.

WILL FANS BE ALLOWED TO ATTEND THE CELTIC VS RANGERS MATCH?

As it stands only 500 people would be allowed in the stadium for the match between Celtic and Rangers.

Usually the clash would be a sell-out with around 60,000 inside Parkhead, but under new restrictions it'd be limited to a 500 capacity.

The lifeline for fans would be if the break is brought forward then the fixture would fall after the three-week review of the stadia capacity rules.

And, provided the Covid situation improves, it could mean a return to capacity crowds. However that is dependent on any Scottish Government decision.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE WINTER BREAK IS BROUGHT FORWARD?

If the winter break is brought forward then it'll mean matches will be postponed and rescheduled for another point during the season.

Any movement forward of the winter break would see the Celtic vs Rangers fixture rescheduled for a later date.

That could mean avoiding the 500-spectator limit currently in place in the hope that when the match is played the restrictions will have been eased.

WHEN WILL WE KNOW ABOUT CELTIC VS RANGERS FIXTURE DECISION?

The SPFL and clubs are understood to have been in talks over the winter break from yesterday.

And it's thought clubs have been asked to submit their preference for consideration by the governing body at 5pm today.

However, it's not clear when any decision would be announced or what the likely outcome of the talks will be.
