RANGERS and Nottingham Forest fans have been locked in debate over the last 24-hours on social media regarding a special anniversary celebration.

Supporters of the English Championship side have taken issue with the Ibrox outfit's claim that they will be the "first major European club" to reach 150-years-old.

Rangers' statement reads: "@Rangers FC will celebrate becoming the first major European club to reach their 150th anniversary by hosting a galaxy of superstars for a Weekend of Legends, presented by @unibet, in March 2022."

With Rangers founded in 1872, Notts Forest fans were far from pleased with the Scottish champion's claim.

Forest famously won the European cup on two occasions in the late 70s.

So, it is clear to see why supporters would regard their club as a "major European club".

Athletic journalist and Nottingham Forest fan Daniel Taylor was quick to point this out on social media.

Quoting the Rangers tweet, he said: "Well, without wishing to be pedantic.. there is also a team known as Nottingham Forest, founded in 1865.

"Two European Cups, one Super Cup (never liquidated)."

Many Forest fans backed Taylor up.

One said: "Have you won a European Cup? Yes = major club. No = Not a major club. It’s not hard…"

A second added: "Sucha strange choice of words. Why not just say 150th anniversary? To me, that's a good enough cause to celebrate. Why add the nonsense of a major European club?

"On top of that, they're now trying to diminish Forest's achievements to support the claim."

Another wrote: "I'd rather be in League One than in the Scottish Premiership, where there's only been 2 champions since the 80s'"

And another fan commented: "Only 22 clubs in the whole of European have won the big one, and Forest have done it twice.

"The idea that Rangers is a major European football club, and Forest aren't is breathtakingly arrogant."

Not that everyone agreed though, as expected.

One Gers fan hit back: "Despite the history, NF have not been a major European club for over 40 years."

Another said: "In fairness Forest haven’t even been a regular top flight club for quite some time.

"Great history, particularly late 70s wasn’t it, but that’s circa four decades ago now."

A third Gers fan wrote: "Is Nottingham Forest a major European Club? When were they last in European Competition?"

And another said: "What is their current coefficient? Rangers are the leading team in Scotland."
