IT remains to be seen whether the crunch Celtic vs Rangers clash that was due to take place earlier this month will be staged in front of a full crowd.

The Scottish Premiership decided on an early winter break after new restrictions were brought in due to a surge of coronavirus cases.

Currently, only 500 supporters are allowed to take in football matches across Scotland no matter the size of stadium.

And today First Minister Nicola Sturgeon updated parliament on the current restrictions.

Ms. Sturgeon told parliament in a virtual sitting: "While we are not proposing any additional measures at this stage, I will confirm that the existing protections and guidance will remain in place for the coming week pending further review."

The FM then added: "I can confirm that the restrictions on large gatherings, the requirement for distancing between groups of people in public indoor places and for table service in hospitality venues serving alcohol on the premises will remain in force for now and indeed, I expect, until 17 January."

The Glasgow derby - initially due to be played  on January 2 - was pushed back to Wednesday, February 2 after the SPFL brought forward the winter break.

Governing body chiefs ruled the break should be moved to follow the Boxing Day fixtures after clubs appealed with Scottish Governemnt curbs limiting capacity to just 500 fans.

It's hoped that following three-weeks of the strict curbs fan capacity restrictions will be eased meaning a full-house for the powderkeg clash.
