DAVIE PROVAN has compared Nathan Patterson to Kieran Tierney after the former Rangers youngster earned a big-money move to England.

The Scotland international linked up with Everton yesterday for a fee that will land his former club a record transfer.

Provan is certain that Patterson will be a success in England but he has raised concerns over manager Rafa Benitez.

He told Go Radio: “I see shades of Kieran Tierney about him.

“I know he’s at a younger age than Kieran was when he made his move but I see similar potential.

“There’s such an assurance about him for such a young man.

“The only slight concern is that I don’t think Rafa Benitez will be there that much longer at Everton.

“It’s always good to have the manager who signed you when you're trying to bed in at a club and that may not be the case.

“Either way though, he has the ability to prove himself at Everton.”

Provan also reckons the move will benefit the Scottish national team with Patterson now the first choice right-back under Steve Clarke.

He added: “Right back has been a problem for Steve Clarke for long enough and now in this young man Nathan Patterson, we have a very obvious choice.

“He’s not just someone who can go into the team, but someone who can go into the Scotland team and stay there for years.

“It's a terrific position we’re now in, to have two outstanding wing-backs in Andy Robertson and Nathan Patterson.

"We also have Kieran Tierney of course who’s been playing centre back but can so capably play left wing-back.”
