KRIS BOYD has responded to a Celtic statement to offer some "context and clarification" to his comments on Callum McGregor.

The former Rangers striker had remarked on McGregor's protective face mask not being 'tested' in the 3-0 win over the Ibrox side on Wednesday night.

The Celtic captain returned to Ange Postecoglou's side for the Glasgow derby fixture and wore the mask throughout due to a fractured cheekbone injury.

Boyd's initial comments in his Scottish Sun column read: “Look at Celtic. Callum McGregor played with a fractured cheekbone.

"The fact he managed to get through the 90 minutes without anyone testing out that face mask is another story, but his commitment to the team was tremendous.”

Celtic announced they would 'address' the matter as they shared a statement on Boyd's comments on Twitter.

The club communication read: "With regards to comments made by former professional footballer Kris Boyd concerning Callum McGregor's injury, we can confirm that the matter is currently being addressed by the club."

Boyd has now released a response to the statement as he insisted there was no suggestion he wanted a Rangers player to "intentionally try and hurt the midfielder".

In the updated response, he insisted any suggestion that was his intention in his column is "absolutely and unequivocally NOT the case".

Boyd wrote: "I think it’s right that I add some context and clarification to a reference I made about Callum McGregor.

"Some have taken that line to mean I wanted one of the Rangers players to intentionally try and hurt the midfielder.

"However, that is absolutely and unequivocally NOT the case.

"It was simply meant as a criticism of the Rangers players for their failure to get close to McGregor."
