Motherwell talking points

RANGERS kept up the pressure on league leaders Celtic with a 3-1 win over Motherwell on Saturday to keep their title hopes alive ahead of a massive week for Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his players.

An early own goal from Liam Kelly sent the Govan outfit on their way to victory before Leon Balogun’s first-half dismissal sparked a response from the hosts. Ross Tierney’s header levelled the scores before Rangers rallied in the second half, pulling away from their opponents thanks to strikes from Scott Wright and James Tavernier.

It was a job well done for Van Bronckhorst and Co, who now turn their attention towards the first leg of their Europa League semi-final away to RB Leipzig on Thursday evening, and there were plenty of interesting details to consider ahead of the momentous clash.

Leipzig preview

RB LEIPZIG'S Great Dane Yussuf Poulsen has demanded his colleagues improve ahead of this week's showdown with Rangers.

The Ibrox side travel to Germany to face Leipzig in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final on Thursday. But while ten-man Rangers were winning in Motherwell, the Saxony outfit later crashed to their first defeat in 16 games against a Union Berlin side they beat in the German Cup semi-finals in midweek.

Leipzig boss Domenico Tedesco made six changes in a bid to freshen up his side, but the move backfired as they slipped to fourth place in the Bundesliga.

Boyd barb

FORMER Rangers striker Kris Boyd was watching as German giants Bayern Munich sealed a tenth consecutive league title with a 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund on Saturday - and he couldn't help firing a cheeky dig towards Celtic.

Julian Nagelsmann's men wrapped up a tenth Bundesliga in a row in thrilling fashion at the weekend and the achievement reminded Boyd of the Parkhead club's own bid to make history.

Last season, the wheels came flying off Celtic's ten-in-a-row bid as Steven Gerrard's Rangers stormed to the Premiership title, following years of goading from triumphant Hoops fans that ten straight championships were inevitable.
