ALLY MCCOIST reckons an 'immense' cup final performance from John Souttar showed why he is ready for life at Rangers next season.

The defender made his last appearance for Hearts on Saturday as he turned out against the side that he will join this summer after agreeing a Bosman switch in January.

Souttar couldn't end his Jambos career on a high note as goals from Ryan Jack and Scott Wright saw Robbie Neilson's side denied Scottish Cup glory at Hampden.

And McCoist was thoroughly impressed with a composed showing from the 25-year-old that gave supporters an insight into what they can expect to see next term.

McCoist said: “I thought he was immense. I just hope he stays fit, that’s all I can ask for.

“He was terrific at Hampden. There were a couple of forward runs and I thought he defended superbly.

"The ball was like a magnet to his head for a period. I just wish him all the best and I hope the lad stays fit.

“You’ve got to have that (character) when you move to Rangers and Celtic. It’s the bare minimum required at the Old Firm.

“It was a tough gig for him. He was under a lot of scrutiny but I thought he came through it with flying colours.

“I’d like to have seen him play against a centre forward right enough! But no seriously he dealt with all so well.

“And so did big Halkett, another boy I know really well. But I think Souttar showed on Saturday he’s more than up for the challenge."
