Ally McCoist is nothing if not a pundit that calls it as he sees it.

There's no questioning where the 355-goal Rangers icon's loyalties lie but he's not one to let his tribal leanings get in the way of an opinion.

And that was certainly the case as he appeared on talkSPORT this morning to talk about the start of the season.

Rangers defeated Livingston 2-1 in a hard-fought match while Celtic defeated Aberdeen 2-0. The game at Parkhead was notable for an incredible clinching goal from Jota who waltzed past a challenge before pinging an unstoppable shot into the top corner from 25 yards.

And it was Hoops winger who impressed McCoist most in the opening set of fixtures, with the veteran pundit even going as far as to brand him a "genius".

Speaking to talkSPORT about the Portuguese, he said: "Brilliant, he is a player.

"I watched the Rangers game on Saturday, football's amazing, it really is.

"Livingston score after about five minutes, defensively it's a poor goal from Rangers and then they totally dominate. They get a goal that was probably just onside. They hit the post, they hit the bar, you're thinking it's going to be one of these days.

"But they score two goals in three minutes and they win the game, which they should do. I was looking forward to watching Celtic yesterday, and I did, I enjoyed them, I must admit. Jota, you and I talk about him all the time, he's a genius."
