Football pundit Stephen Craigan insists Motherwell should “push the boat out” and appoint former Celtic boss Neil Lennon.

The Steelmen are searching for a new manager after Graham Alexander was sacked following a humiliating early exit from the Europa Conference League against Sligo Rovers. Steven Hammell, who is ‘Well’s post-war record appearance holder, has been placed in temporary charge at Fir Park.

Lennon is currently at the helm at Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia and has won the club silverware already despite only being there since March – and Craigan believes Lennon could turn around Motherwell’s fortunes.

He told Go Radio: "That would be a big coup for Motherwell to get Neil Lennon. When it was first mentioned I thought no chance. However, if there is something contriving towards him getting it I think Motherwell fans would certainly take that.

"I would imagine if Motherwell thought they had an opportunity to get Neil Lennon they would push the boat out for him. I've no doubt that they would push the boat out for him.

"We don't know anything, it's just the names come up in the conversation. But if you're asking the question 'would Neil Lennon be a good appointment for Motherwell?' Absolutely."

Celtic hero John Hartson added: "I wouldn't be surprised. I don't know how he's getting on his current job, I know they won the cup last season.

"He lives in Glasgow. I don't know his family situation, whether they're with him. But I wouldn't be overly surprised if Neil is in for the job but I have no idea if he is or not."
