DERMOT GALLAGHER believes referee Don Robertson should have sent off Rangers defender James Sands against Ross County on Saturday.

The American was on a yellow card before hauling down Ross County striker Jordy Hiwula as he broke at pace.

Sands got away with the foul and Robertson waved play on, but Gallagher believes a free-kick should have been given.

He told Sky Sports News: “The referee didn’t think it was a foul but if he gives a foul it’s a straight red card.

"At worst it would be a second yellow but the referee plays on so he doesn’t think it’s a foul but I actually do - I think it’s a foul and a straight red card.”

Sands was subbed at half-time following the incident and Malky Mackay vented his frustrations after the match.

He said: “Sands pulls down Jordy with two hands around his waist. He’s already been booked but it’s inexplicable how it’s not a straight red, never mind a booking which would take him off as well.

“Rangers took him off at half-time which shows what they think. I can’t see how anyone who sees it on TV will think other than it’s a straight red. The dynamics of the game changes if he goes off.”
