WULLIE GIBSON insists his Queen of the South players did themselves proud against Rangers

The League One outfit eventually went down 3-1 at Ibrox in the Premier Sports Cup last-16 tie.

However, for large spells, Queens remained in the game and looked dangerous on the counter-attack.

Lee Connelly bagged a wonderful goal for the visitors, with a sensational chip over Allan McGregor.

But a double from Scott Arfield and one from Robbie Ure ensured Rangers' progression to the quarter-finals.

Gibson was rightfully pleased with his players' efforts, though.

He told Premier Sports: "I thought the boys gave a good account of themselves.

"The biggest disappointment comes with the manner of the first goal. We knew that the first 15-20-minutes would be key. To give a cheap goal away is disappointing.

"I thought the boys reacted really well. Lee's scored a great goal.

"We had our chances. We didn't create clear-cut chances but we had our moments when we broke away. I think if we had the final pass or made the right decisions in the final third then we could have caused Rangers more problems.

"The goal gave the fans something to cheer about. We've got a very good travelling support.

"They're passionate, they love the town and they love the club. The players appreciate their support, so to give them that moment was special."

Queens' league form has been the best so far this campaign.

And Gibson is keen to see his side carry forward tonight's performance into League One action.

He added: "We've got to take confidence from it. We've come to a very tough venue to play a tough side we we've done ourselves proud.

"Our priority is the league. We've got to take what we can from tonight and build on that."
