RANGERS legend Mark Hateley has questioned whether Rangers can afford to sack Giovanni van Bronckhorst after the heavy defeat to Ajax.

Pressure is building on the Ibrox manager after back-to-back 4-0 defeats to Celtic and then the Eredivisie side in the Champions League.

And Hateley reckons fans will be wondering if Van Bronckhorst will be given time to rectify recent results or if he'll come under pressure from club chiefs.

Van Bronckhorst led Rangers to the Europa League final last season and won the Scottish Cup after replacing Steven Gerrard in the Ibrox dugout.

And while the Dutchman has only been in charge since November, Hateley reckons there could be question marks over his position after recent results with the club trailing Celtic in the league by five points.

Speaking on BBC Scotland, Hateley pondered: "It's a big question that one at this stage in the season, especially when you're saying the board haven't got money to spend.

"Can they afford to sack him? That's the next question, or do they just let this play out?

"That's what the question will be from the supporters.

"Why haven't we invested from a place of strength? Why haven't we kept Bassey, Aribo and built on that?

"If they had a bit more investment in the summer they could've held onto two really top players and built on that."
